Goals A. Differentiate between absolute and relative truth (objectivity vs. subjectivity)
B. Apply different frameworks to assess information
C. Challenge personal beliefs to consider how these theories can complement and contradict each other in deliberative settings
Terms: http://www.toktalk.net/2008/11/09/three-different-types-of-truth/
Correspondence Theory of Truth → something is true if it corresponds to reality; requires the assumption of the existence of a reality; the role of senses/sense deception
Coherence Theory of Truth → something is true if it is consistent with other things that we consider true; not as important to be an accurate depiction of reality; (EX: a group all hears something and thinks an event happens vs. the event actually happening)
The Pragmatic Theory of Truth → This theory states that something is true if it is useful.
Activity: Application of each one
Notecard: Write down one thing you believe is truth and several reasons justifying your statement
Activity: Reaching a consensus if we all subscribe to different theories
Who should be a stakeholder in decision making?
Can we apply different theories for truth in a way that is beneficial for society?
What do we do if two theories with reasonable premises reach radically different conclusions with different implications for society/individuals?
When is disagreement good vs. bad? Deliberation vs. argument?
Apply each theory of truth to evaluate Trump's statement
Is there such a thing as a true statement if we might all have different theories for truth?
Is there a theory that is more conducive to sustaining mental/physical health vs. making economic and social policies?
Does this change the way you react or respond to his position?
Questions to leaves with and consider..
Is there ever a best way to evaluate information?
What is it important to question the logic or reasoning behind an opinion before accepting/rejecting it?
How is truth subjective or relative to our positionality or proximity to an event?
How are reactions and responses guided by these theories or different frameworks...Can we change our reactions to others such that decision making is possible without compromising our values and beliefs?
How do we reach a consensus in a world where we all have different theories for and understandings of truth?
